The Nuthatch

A vivid flash of blue and white
From tree to tree he darts in flight
Till something spurs him to alight.

A cheeky bird, this little runt,
Why, upside down on bole he’ll hunt
And crown to root he does this stunt!

What does his beady eye espy?
A tiny hole in which to pry
For gnawing bug or hiding fly.

Tenaciously he works the hole
Attacking bark of chosen bole
His task engrossing heart and soul.

His prize from hole his beak does drag
And proudly he consumes the swag
Then lifts his nasal voice to brag.

Refurbished by his tiny snack
He contemplates his next attack
Then off he flies upon his track
The chosen tree trunk to ransack.
