"When Jesus was about to leave His disciples and apostles, He promised them that He would not leave them deprived of the comfort they got from His presence. He assured then that He would send them 'another comforter' (these are His words) who would more than do substitute for Him. 'And I will ask the Father, and He shall give you another Paraclete (that is, consoler), that He may abide with you forever.' (Rom. 8:28) This pledge was redeemed on the morning of Pentecost. On that day Jesus sent One, who is prepared to fulfill perpetually, with regard to all the redeemed, the most exacting duties of friendship. God the Holy Ghost is the Divine Friend of the human souls to whom He is sent.
Jesus sends His Holy Spirit to us in order, amongst other purposes, to banish from our life on earth that which constitutes one of the great pains of our existence. The term with which the Saviour selects to name the Holy Spirit that He was to send to His disciples - a term that bespeaks the tender and almost homely concern of Jesus for the painful lot of His followers in this world - manifests that consolation and comfort and strength and encouragement are envisioned as being not the least amongst the effects that flow to the soul from the presence of the Third Divine Person within it."
